Argentina: the ark of the Perito Moreno glacier is breaking

The Argentine authorities announced that the famous Perito Moreno ice arch broke in the night from Sunday to Monday, March 12, 2018. Thousands of tourists had made the special trip to attend, both the collapse of huge blocks of pure blue ice is impressive. But the Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia, located 2,000 km southwest of Buenos Aires, was closed at the time the phenomenon occurred.

A cyclical phenomenon

The rupture " is still spectacular but this time more water has accumulated than the previous three or four times ", explained a few days before the news channel TN Luciano Bernacchi, director of the Glaciarium, a museum located nearby of Glacier National Park. According to this expert, this is a natural phenomenon for this type of glacier. The singularity of the latter is due to the fact that it progresses continuously unlike the others, which lose the frozen surface.

It is this accumulation that ends up causing the rupture and the detachment of gigantic blocks of ice. The front of the glacier is more than 60 meters above the water at its maximum height from which constantly falls pieces of different sizes, producing a strident noise comparable to a thunderclap, according to the website of the Los Glaciares National Park. The collapse of the Perito Moreno, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, usually occurs in March, that is, in the late summer and early autumn. This phenomenon, one of the most impressive natural shows in the world, occurs every two to four years since 2004 when it had not happened in the previous 16 years. The last time in 2016 was in broad daylight and thousands of tourists had attended.
